CFD has found applications in the modeling of various automotive systems involving fluid flow, heat transfer, chemical kinetics, multiphase flows, and fluid-structure interaction.
ESI-CFD offers a full suite of integrated software tools for the rapid prototyping of engineering concepts, design modifications, and performing parametric studies.
Some of the areas of applications shown here include:

  • HVAC/Climate Control
  • Intake/Exhaust Manifold
  • External Aerodynamics
  • Underhood engine cooling
  • Catalytic Converters
  • Engine
  • Grid Generation

The capabilities of the software package includes for the Automotive Industry:

  • Multi-block structured grids with many-to-one coupling enabling local mesh refinement.
  • Rotating coordinates, moving meshes and walls for pistons, valves and other moving objects.
  • Internal solid objects, concentrated and distributed flow resistances such as solid/perforated plates, blockages and porous media.
  • Variety of turbulence models: k-e, k-w, RNG, two-layer and more.
  • Multi-step stiff chemical kinetics for modeling combustion and catalytic surface chemistry.
  • Exhaust emissions analysis and catalytic converters.
  • Two-phase droplet/particle "spray" injection. Collision, coalescence, evaporation, drop dispersion due to turbulence and combustion, particulate melting / solidification.
  • Multi-media, multi-block, conjugate heat transfer for analysis of engine coolant circuit.
  • Radiation heat transfer using discrete ordinate method.
  • A mixed element unstructured grid code
